About the Position

This position will focus on supporting my academic teaching, research, publishing, and speaking activities. You will provide creative, technical, and administrative assistance. Because I work in many areas, there is not a routine set of tasks to do. Since my schedule is full, you will eventually need to be able to pull tasks away from me and be able to tell me the things I need to complete and when. As Steve Jobs said, "it doesn't make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do." Some typical tasks are listed below.

Research Related Activities

  • "Research" in this context means academic research, not the populist description for "looking stuff up on the Internet"
  • Help to administer and coordinate research projects and create research reports and materials
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Summarize papers, articles, and book chapters
  • Prepare synthesis and analysis between background literature
  • Prepare references and citations
  • Collect and analyze data
  • Draft or edit research briefings, manuscripts, paper sections, or book chapters
  • Review the work of other research team members and provide comments, editing, or additional content
  • Draft figures and graphics
  • Organize research files and materials
  • Prepare materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations
  • Prepare, maintain, and update website materials
  • Manage project-related correspondence
  • Summarize project results
  • Prepare progress reports
  • Prepare other articles, reports, posters, and presentations
  • Assist with duties related to publishing in academic journals or presenting at conferences
  • Other tasks as requested

Course and Teaching-Related Activities

  • Help to administer and coordinate class activities and create course content and materials
  • Research class topics
  • Source appropriate background materials
  • Summarize papers, articles, and book chapters
  • Prepare outlines and lecture notes
  • Prepare lecture slides and presentations
  • Prepare figures and graphics
  • Prepare course materials and handouts
  • Prepare drafts of problem sets, homework questions, quizzes, and exams
  • Draft responses to students on course-related questions
  • Organize course files and content
  • Review and edit or comment on drafts of student papers, manuscripts, and reports
  • Prepare scripts for screencasts and podcasts
  • Draft letters of recommendation or other student support materials
  • Other tasks as requested

Desirable Knowledge and Skills

  • High level of personal integrity and professionalism
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of research work and original content
  • High level of academic integrity. No plagiarism or copying
  • Knowledge of research techniques and methods, and the format of research papers
  • Strong English language skills, particularly in writing
  • Strong writing and editing skills, from high-level composition and (re)structuring of documents down to line edits, spelling, and grammar
  • Superior organizational skills and constant attention to detail
  • Need to be able to create, tune, and document processes and workflow systems
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, proactively, and efficiently using good judgment. Self-motivated and efficient time-manager. Ability to meet deadlines and keep schedules and appointments
  • Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, time-sensitive, high output environment
  • Knowledge of the field of information technology, engineering, or computer science
  • Knowledge of project management and agile techniques such as scrum or kanban (we will typically do a quick daily "stand up" meeting by video conference)
  • You don’t necessarily need to know how to do everything yourself, such as graphic design, but you will need to help find and manage people and resources when we need to outsource
