To Investigate The Possibilities of Setting Up a Feminine Language in
Cinema with Digital Storytelling
Feminist ideology tends to reduce any domination by questioning. For this reason, the
feminist film theory examines the representation of the woman on the screen and the
view of the man and the woman to the cinema. In this study, within the framework of
feminist theory and feminist film narrative approach in cinema, it was aimed to draw
a framework for the possibility of establishing feminine language in cinema through
the female director. The Digital Storytelling workshop was organized to include the
female audience and to see the connection with the film. For this purpose, the film
“Mustang” directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven was chosen in this study. The narrative
of the film was evaluated by the feminist film narrative of Smelik (2008), how she
presented the feminine language to the audience through her perspective and
characters. It has been seen that the film presents gender differences with a woman's
perspective and presents criticism of the asymmetric power relationship between
sexes. The film's female audience, “My Scene” Digital Storytelling Workshop, was
commissioned and six digital storytelling stories were produced during the workshop.
The potential to create a feminine language was observed in the stories that evaluated
the film through the scenes they identified with the Mustang film. In the content and
thematic analysis of the stories, it was observed that femininity was placed in the
center of the stories. In the workshop ''My Scene," the participants experienced the
domination of the patriarchal structure with the stories they created.
