DESIGN
DELIVERY
1. CONCEPT DESIGN
3. CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
We have a meeting with you, to talk about the brief.
We like to spend a fair amount of time in this stage to really get
the design right - we like it to be a collaborative process between
us all. We will usually ask you to make a scrapbook of ideas,
designs and/or inspiration that you like, and annotate them, which
helps to establish a clear dialogue between us. We, as your
architects, then try to read between the lines and establish what it
is that you really want.
All our designs are very different because each client is so
unique - a quality that we feel should be celebrated.
This part of the process involves really putting pen to paper,
preparing plans, elevations and section drawings. These
drawings communicate to the builder the intention of the design.
The preparation of a construction document includes notations
about joinery details (such as windows and doors), and also
the development of specifications - written descriptions of the
information contain in the drawings. Specifications describe
your desired quality of materials, finishes and quality of work.
It also includes all the relevant Australian warranties and
standards that we expect from the builder.
Some small elements of design are still being finalised during
this stage, and we will continue to bring drawing sets to any
client meetings to show, for example, a joinery package.
All of these documents then get submitted for approval.
Initially, we get a land surveyor to assess the block and measure
it up, and then design two or three different schemes.
One is often very similar to any of your sketches, one is a less
conservative idea, and the third usually is a blend of the two.
We will have a meeting with you and present these designs.
By the next meeting, we will have merged elements from each
of the schemes that you like into a main concept design.
At this point we also establish and review the project budget, and
begin to adjust the designs accordingly, moving on to stage 2,
Design Development.

The next stage involves hiring a builder. We have builders that
we frequently work with, and can suggest one that we feel will
be a good match for you and your project. There is also the
option of bringing a different builder on.
Some clients will choose to work with one builder from start to
finish, while others will put it out to a competitive tender, a
process that we help guide clients through.
2. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
4. PROJECT MANAGEMENT (contract admin)
This stage involves developing one of the initial concept designs.
It’s now that we start to draw up internal elevations and can start
to show elements like surfaces and joinery, as well as considering
a range of materials.
During this stage, we handle all communications with builders,
including answering questions, overseeing and checking
invoices before they are sent to clients, and conducting site
visits every two weeks (as well as at important milestones).
We have a sample box of materials that we bring to each meeting,
as well as visual essays, so you can start to get a tangible idea of
what the space will be like.
We understand that you have a busy life. You maybe can’t get
out to the building site for meetings often enough, or don’t feel
confident enough to answer builder’s questions on the spot.
Let us handle the details for you!
OUR
CLIENTS’
TESTIMONIALS
K. STRAZDINS, SURREY HILLS, RENOVATION
L. WARD, SILVERLEAVES, NEW BUILD
We hardly dared to dream that we could turn a dark, dingy,
1930’s clinker brick house into a light-filled, modern, practical
family home. We are thrilled to have actually achieved it!
When we decided to engage an architect we knew there
would be challenges, but we wanted to build something
really special.
We were both in the building industry and had renovated
many homes before, but knew that we needed professional
help to bring out the best in our block.
We were apprehensive about hiring an architect because
we didnt want to lose control and end up with something
that didn’t feel like ‘us’. But we need not have worried Monique and Scott listed to what we wanted and came up
with the most amazing design!
We were definitely nervous about the modern brick pattern
- even talking about rendering it if we hated it. But we think
it looks fantastic! Really marrying the old and the new, while
at the same time distinguishing between the two.
We ended up with a futurisitc mix of glazed and coloured
bricks, with one brick colour even matching our dog Ziggy!
“It was a great
collaborative
process with
our architects
- we are just
as proud of it
as they are!”
WOWOWA was such an easy company to deal with, and
were happy to discuss details and issues as they arose
- but more importantly, understood that we had a budget
and were able to come up with a design that fit into it.
The best part about our new house is the feeling we get
every time we walk in - the space is so light and bright, it
just makes you feel good. One of our favourite aspects of
their design is they way it captured the landscape from
outside so that it felt like an inside feature - brilliant!
Anyone who wants a fresh design that fits their family and
lifestyle would be safe in the hands of WOWOWA.
S. OWEN, BLACK ROCK, RENOVATION
We had a vision for what our home would be like before we
started out. We wanted something special, surprising,
complimentary to the character of the home and beautifully
detailed. We hope through good design that our family can
live a healthy, relaxed and happy lifestyle and that we are
able to pursue our desire to live sustainably. The thing we
liked most about WOWOWA is their sustainable design
approach.
We had some reservations when we were considering hiring
an architect. We were concerned our vision for the way we
wanted to live and what we wanted the home to be wouldn’t
be understood or worse, ignored.
The cost was also a consideration. We knew, however, that
if we found the right architect that understood us, that was
on the same wavelength as us, that the resulting design
would have a positive impact on
our lives, and this would
outweigh the cost.
“WOWOWA
are a practice
that listens.
Your requirements
are respected and taken seriously.”
WOWOWA understood that we were doing the construction
work ourselves, with the help of family. They were very
accommodating, producing a design that we could mostly
build ourselves, without compromising aesthetics or quality.

It’s been great working with the WOWOWA team - such an
inspiring journey so far. We greatly appreciate their hard work
and fresh approach to design. We can’t wait to see the built
result - we know it will be well worth the wait!
“I love being in the living areas,
there are special
little features
everywhere
that often
bring a smile
to my face.”
S. ROBERTS, WEST FOOTSCRAY, RENOVATION
After seeing some of WOWOWA’s designs, we were excited
about the prospect of having them design our renovation.
We weren’t disappointed, and have recommended
WOWOWA to our family and friends - Monique and Scott
were able to explain the nuts and bolts of the architectural
process to us in an easily understandable way and made
us feel comfortable. Within a couple of weeks we had a
design that we were thrilled with.
We wanted to achieve a great deal of lifestyle improvement
from the redesign of our living spaces. Their design showed
that they clearly understood our need for balance between
having playful and exciting child-friendly spaces for the kids
and quiet, calm but still spacious grown - up spaces for the
adults. We will never want to leave the house again!
“Without them we would have
ended up with a very boring
extension instead of a thrilling
new space!”

Monique lists green juice and homewares as two of her great
loves - both of which she feels are made better when
experienced in a well-designed space. She is passionate
about solving spatial problems, and increasing standards of
living for all Melbournians by communicating the value of
good design.
Scott began his career exploring the art of sculpture,
graduating from RMIT with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995
and completed honours the following year. He studied in both
The Netherlands and Amsterdam as part of the student
exchange program. Many of his sculptural works have been
featured in a number of exhibhitions, both locally and
internationally.
Monique studied architecture at RMIT, and also spent time
in Copenhagen, living and studying at The Danish Academy
of Fine Arts as a part of the university’s exchange program.
As a student, Monique took on part-time work at various
Melbourne practices. In the middle of 2009, Monique
completed the Masters program at RMIT University, and in
2010 co-founded WoodWoodWard Architecture.
She was named “A star on debut” by The Age in 2011 for
WOWOWA’s ‘Finn House’ project, and has written articles for
publications and online journals.
Holding a place on the Victorian Young Architects Committee
has given Monique the opportunity to speak at and chair
various ‘Process’ and institute events.
She has also been a part of the AIA Awards jury.
Monique is passionate about helping young architects
develop and guiding the way they tackle design problems in
her role as a tutor at RMIT and Monash University, having run
design studios since 2009.

In 1997, however, Scott returned to Australia and decided to
study architecture - a decision many clients are glad he made,
as many of his projects have gone on to win various awards
for environmental sustainability, innovation and excellence in
the architecture industry.
Scott worked for a number of high profile architecture firms
before co-founding WoodWoodWard Architecture. The firm
has gone on to design a number of notable homes, including
The Forever House, which received much acclaim for it’s
renovation design.
Scott was part of 3RRR Radio’s broadcast program in 2012,
and has been featured in many articles, both print and online.
He has also held a seat on the Victorian Architecture Awards
jury, and continues to help foster architectural talent in his
