Charles Jacob Tan

I graduated from the University of Toronto as of June 23, 2021 with a specialization in Statistics and a double minor in Computer Science and Math. 

The main language I code in is Python although I am perfectly capable working in more statistical heavy languages such as R, STATA, SAS, as well as with more common technologies such as Microsoft Excel. Furthermore, I have plenty of experience working with database management systems such as MySQL and PostgreSQL which I utilized on a couple occasions for school projects and in my most recent internship.

In my most recent internship, I worked as a business analyst for Bell Canada although it more closely resembled the role of a data analyst as I was mainly responsible for creating performance dashboards to monitor specific metrics of Bell’s mobile app through the Plotly and Dash libraries on Python. Furthermore, I decided to integrate forecasting functionalities to predict the future of the mobile app’s performance metrics through SARIMAX, Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and other time series models. 

Returning to my last year of school, I served as a research assistant for Professor Luai Al Labadi where I carried out a comparison study to evaluate the predictive performance of various Poisson regression models on a COVID cases/deaths time series dataset. I utilized Python and R to perform hypothesis and goodness of fit tests to determine which model consisting of various social/economic indicators best fit the COVID-19 population trends in U.S counties.

At present, a project that I am currently trying to improve on is my COVID X-ray diagnosis web application that I developed amidst the COVID pandemic. During times when swabbing can be costly in time, I thought it would be invaluable to have an app that could immediately classify whether or not an individual has COVID.
