Prof. Dr Norhasmah Binti Sulaiman Faculty of Medicine and Health, Department of Community Nutrition University Putra Malaysia-Tel: - Key Competencies and Professional Expertise Proven ability to manage projects and promote teamwork For the last 12 months I have worked both with an agribusiness marketing company and a non-governmental organisation.During my time with the organisation I have demonstrated the ability to work both as a valuable team member and have also been responsible for leading project-based work. An example of a project I managed, titled ‘Project Rebuild CHRI’ involved completing and clearing out all the tasks from our original CMS system, and transferring the old and new content over to the updated CMS system. As a team leader, I was responsible for a variety of tasks including, creating a project timeline, training team members on the new system, assigning tasks, scheduling and coordinating check-in meetings, and liaising with senior management around updates on the system and team progress. During my role of project manager, I developed considerable communication and time-management skills in order to effectively and efficiently complete the job. The key factor that my role required during Project Rebuild CHRI was for me to ensure we worked cohesively as a team. Our team worked well under pressure, adopted the changes immediately and handled the increases to workload. We would regularly check in as a team where I asked open-ended questions to ensure that these lines of communication were clear and strong amongst team members. All of the skills I have gained whilst carrying out this project, particularly communication, organisation and time management, can be readily applied to any role. Sound oral and written communication skills My work experience at Girl Child Concerns meant that I developed and applied skills in these areas. I was dealing regularly with students, suppliers and staff in person and over the phone. One of my duties was to contract local suppliers, which utilised all my communication skills. Dealing with a line manager’s request to order materials and equipment involved talking to the supplier over the phone, entering the product and supplier’s information into the computer database, ordering the product and recontacting the supplier and line managers to ensure satisfaction with product specifications Further to this, I clearly and concisely documented this information in our filing system for the benefit of other staff. Using clear communication, in oral and written forms, I ensured a good relationship with our suppliers was maintained and provided efficient and effective customer service. As a result of this, my manager commended my communication skills at my performance appraisal, and I was delegated to the task of staff trainer. Sound organisational and administrative skills As an experienced and proficient programme manager, I pride myself on my strong organisational and administrative skills. In my current role at Centre for Human Rights in Islam, I am responsible for Managing the organisation and assisting the executive director. Part of my duties and responsibilities include grant proposal writing, providing the director with administrative support, organising his schedules, making travel arrangements, answering all incoming calls, contracting local suppliers, arranging meetings and presentations, tracking accounts, managing events, greeting visitors, as well as ad hoc duties. I am sometimes presented with tight time frames to complete these exercises. An example of this was when I recently received an early morning phone call from the director and was asked to organise a flight and presentation for him for an event in Abuja that day, complete with breakfast and lunch catering. I prioritised what needed to be organised, secured the next flight out and prepared and emailed a Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation. Although very short notice was given, the day and presentation was a success and all was seamlessly executed. My position requires me to be efficient and organised in a busy and demanding environment. I have proven my ability to prioritise, multi-task, manage my time well, and balance different managers; and have been repeatedly praised for these skills my superior.
